Social Round-Up

Facebook becoming Twitter-like

This week Facebook introduced yet another new feature, the Subscribe button. Facebook announced that:

“Until now, it hasn’t been easy to choose exactly what you see in your News Feed. Maybe you don’t want to see every time your brother plays a game on Facebook, for example. Or maybe you’d like to see more stories from your best friends, and fewer from your coworkers.”

And with that came the birth of the Subscribe button. Much like  the Twitter ‘follow’ concept, users can now choose specific friends to ‘suscribe’ to. Not only that but now you can even select people who are not actually your friends, for instance interesting politicians, journos and even celebs.

Essentially it’s Twitter for all those naïve Facebookers who haven’t quite worked out how to indulge themselves into the great Twitterverse. It really seems as if Zuckerberg et al. are trying to outdo every social network out there. There are even rumoured plans for Facebook to introduce a photo filter service akin to Instagram, after their failed acquisition in the summer months. Can Facebook really succeed at monopolising the social networking market?

Following this, Facebook are now giving their users the ability to automatically publish their status updates straight to Twitter. This function makes up part of the new subscriptions feature, and to do this, users will need to go to Facebook’s dedicated page for Twitter and link their Facebook page to their Twitter account.

Live Burberry Catwalk show on Twitter

In a wonderful merge of two greats–fashion and social media, Burberry is bringing its runway collection to the masses, on Twitter. Unless you have been living under a rock you will be very much aware that this week is of course London Fashion Week. To all those fashion fanatics who have spent years dreaming of being at a runway show at London Fashion Week, you will be excited to hear that for the first time in LFW history, Burberry – the mother of British fashion- is showing their womenswear SS12 collection show LIVE today at 4pm! At last our (digital) prayers have been answered!

The fashion house has successfully partnered with Twitter to develop what the two companies are calling a “Tweetwalk.” On the brands Twitter account, backstage Twitpics of every single look will be shared with their followers, before the models even hit the runway, enabling Twitter followers to see the collection moments before anyone else! Eeeek – How exciting!!

The digitally savvy fashion brand Burberry will also be streaming its show live in HD through their site and Facebook.

To make matters even more exciting, Burberry’s Instagram account is being usurped this afternoon by photographer Mike Kus (the most-followed Instagram user in the UK).

Is this the best news you’ve ever heard on a Monday, or what??!!

Tumblr reaches 10 billion posts

Some great news for the social blogging platform Tumblr this week, as they each 10 billion posts since their launch in 2007. Last year, Tumblr hit its 7 millionth post, and since then, the social network has more than ten-times that number. What a fantastic achievement! According to analytic reports, Tumblr currently receives a whopping 37.5 million posts a day. It seems as if they are really gaining momentum in the blogging world and are definitely making a name for themselves.

FACEBOOK AND LUXURY BRANDs

Shortly after I made a recent purchase from the Abercrombie and Fitch store, I found the following messaging carefully placed at the bottom of the bag they gave me “Check out A&F on Facebook“.

With 4.9m fans on their Facebook page, A & F look to be fully optimizing Facebook as an engagement channel with frequent updates receiving thousands of likes and hundreds of comments.

Thanks to a deck from Buddy Media in the US, I looked a bit further in to prestige brands on Facebook and found some interesting stats:

Most popular fashion pages on Facebook

Burberry 6.5m
Abercrombie and Fitch 4.9m
Gucci 4.7m
Chanel 3.9m
Ralph Lauren 3.3m

To put this in perspective:

Global circulation of most popular fashion magazines

Cosmopolitan 3m
Glamour 2.4m
In Style 1.8m
Vogue 1.3m
Vanity Fair 1.2m

What has the highest interaction rates?

Product highlights 21%
Company info 15%
Questions 14%

Interestingly, no product offers or promotions feature in the top 3. This is a big opportunity for new product development for brands. Simply posting a new dress, shirt or pair of shoes and asking for feedback can yield a huge response. Using this interaction as research can help justify the launch of a new product line.

What’s next ?

Of course the endgame for prestige brands on Facebook has to be commerce ( or F – Commerce). Millions of fans are there ready and waiting, there lies the opportunity to monetize and capitalize on those high levels of engagement by opening a Facebook store.
